an
EVENT

Art is a unique tool God has given us, often calling us to see something familiar in a different way or to see something entirely new for the first time. Over Holy Week, we’re excited to be displaying Scott Erickson’s “Stations of the Cross” series as a multi-sensory exhibit.

Welcome to Journey to the Cross – using the Stations in the Street, an experiential art exhibit based on the Stations of the Cross, featuring the work of Scott Erickson. This exhibit is hosted by Evergreen, but the work will also be scattered throughout the community. The Stations of the Cross are an ancient and deeply-rooted tradition that help us contemplate the depth and meaning of Christ’s death on the cross.

From the earliest days following his death, Jesus-followers told the story of his passion, his death, and his resurrection. When followers came on pilgrimage, they were anxious to see the places where Jesus was arrested, tried, condemned, carried his cross, and where he died. These places connected Jesus-followers with him.

Eventually, following in the footsteps of Jesus became a holy practice. When it was no longer easy, or even possible, to visit the original holy sites, the Stations of the Cross, became popular in villages and cities across Europe. Each station used art to represent a moment of the crucifixion story – his arrest and condemnation. His final words. His death. His entombment.

the
EXPERIENCE

This exhibit at Evergreen Baptist features 6-points along the journey. There are 12 pieces of art (or stations) that will engage you through various multi-sensory activities. The 12 art pieces will also be scattered throughout the Appomattox area. Can you find them all? (It’s a scavenger hunt!)

At each point on the exhibit’s journey, you’ll find two images that draw you in to engage on your journey that follow’s Christ’s journey to the cross.

You’ll also be given a journey guide that will give you challenges and thought-provoking thoughts and questions.

The exhibit will be Sunday (3/24) through Friday (3/29) from 5-7pm …

  • You are invited to engage in this time however you are most comfortable. Come once, then maybe return another night with some friends.
  • For some, this will mean looking, listening, and reading while praying for Jesus to be real during this Easter season.
  • We believe transformation will happen when we open our hearts and minds to be moved by God.

However you engage, please note – this is not an intellectual exercise which we undertake to learn more about the historical events surrounding Jesus’ final hours. This is a time for spiritual reflection, and for connection with something greater than us, with God.
